Meanwhile ’Black Sludge’ can deposit on a piston surface and act as an inulating layer to influence engine efficacy and heat transfer, sometimes may even cause crankcase explosion, therefore selecting proper TPEOs plays a significant role in controlling ’Black Sludge’. A key design feature for preventing asphaltene precipitation is choosing the proper additives, especially detergent additives in reducing ’Black Sludge’. In this paper, asphaltene dispersancy effectiveness was investigated through making the simulated solutions according to the hydrocarbon types of typical Group I and Group II base oils. Utilizing different facilities including Malvern Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzer,LaserNet Fines®-C particle counter, Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement to interpret the effectiveness of calcium alkyl sulfonate and calcium alkyl salicylate with combining traditional spot dispersancy test. All tests have a good correlation with real asphaltene dispersancy effectiveness. Test results show that salicylate package has a more outstanding performance than sulfonate one.
